This Rituporno Ghosh directorial venture illustrates the crisis of a man who craves for womanhood and ends with a much affirmative message ‘Be What You Wish To Be’ thus justifying its tagline ‘The Crowning Wish’. The Rituparno Ghosh, Jisshu Sengupta, and Anjan Dutt starrer movie was appreciated for voicing the plight of the people struggling for gender identity.

Srijit Mukherjee’s magnum opus tells the story of the partition from the perspective of a bunch of prostitutes played by Rituparno Sengupta, Saayoni Ghosh and Sohini Sarkar in Rajkahini, who refuse to abandon their brothel for the erection of Radcliffe Line. The forthright and hard-hitting narrative of the movie made it one of the ‘A’ certificate Bengali movies. The content of the movie garnered mostly positive reviews despite multiple factual flaws. Special Mention: Nagarkirtan (2019)

Kaushik Ganguly’s much-talked-about film Nagarkirtan touches the most tabooed and ignored part of our society. It is about the love story of Parimal AKA Puti, a transwoman, who is born with a body of a man but is a woman at her heart. Puti falls for Madhu, a flute player and their love story starts rolling with the burden of society’s disapproval. Starring Ritwick Chakraborty and Riddhi Sen, the film has bagged multiple National Awards including the Nation Award for the Best Actor (Riddhi) in 2018.
